So I haven't blogged in a while. The past month has been great. New York has a certain kind of energy in the summer that feels magical in a way & I'm grateful to be here. I've been enjoying writing songs by myself, with my awesome songwriting soul mates & playing live shows.
I want to pinch myself everyday, I feel lucky to have people on my team who are passionate about what I'm doing & I can't thank them enough.
The sun has brought with it some of my good energy folks around me. I played my electric guitar in Martian Luther'sband _The AfroPunk Festival in Brooklyn. He is good people & it felt great to just be a part of his movement.
My good friend & just all around dope artist/songwriter/producer Novel shot his video for his single "We got it bad" featuring me as the leading lady. Look out for it soon. Directed by Rik Cordero & people the video is hot :-)
Last night I played an acoustic show _Rockwood with Steve on electric & had a blast. Now I get to play with Don Was in our hometown Detroit _ The Concert of Colors. I'm honored and geeked about that & I will for sure tape this, it must be documented. Then back to NYC & then I'm off to Chicago to play the B.M.I stage at Lollapalooza August 6th.
So in short without being too long things are going great and I'm lovin summer of '10.

The past few weeks have been pretty busy. Have moved twice already & had two great shows with my band in New york & Philly. I posted up a few clips from a camera placed on stage. I will be better at getting more footage in the future. Some exciting plans are being made & will finally be getting back to the album very soon. But for now the mood is that I'm in a very cool & fortunate place :-)

Mayaeni
(mah-yay-knee)
From Detroit to London, Sierra Leone to New York to Japan, Mayaeni has traveled far and wide, absorbing the many cultures she's experienced, bringing a depth to her music and lyrics that far belies her 24 years.
The daughter of a West African mother and a Jewish father (a former guitar player who played with Sylvester, Carl Carlton and Jimmy Ruffin) -- Mayaeni has had no shortage of influences to draw from in her rich cultural background.
She started out writing songs on her own and recording in the studio at 12 years old. Mayaeni moved to New York by herself at age 17. Although having to use a fake id to get in, Mayaeni was a regular in the New York live music scene, singing at over 100 open-mic's her first 2 years in the city. She also began writing and recording demos for other artists and working with well known hip hop based producers.
While holding down as many as four part-time jobs at a time, working other odd gigs and pursuing music, Mayaeni gained invaluable experience that put her in a New York state of mind for the years of hustle to come.
After cutting a few demos with one of her idols, Billy Lawrence, she went on to write and release her own first self-titled indie album with her father and producer Shaun Fisher (Mandy Moore). Mayaeni found her own unique sound by working with her voice and the guitar, abandoning writing to studio-cut tracks.
She went on the grind doing whatever it took to get her music out there, and being a true D.I.Y artist became a ‘jack of all trades’ developing the skills necessary for people to take notice.
The album was well received and resulted in shows in New York and Detroit as well as a tour of Japan. While in Japan, Glad News Clothing, a popular label in Japan, New York and Los Angeles, signed her to an endorsement contract, unheard of for an independent artist.
It was not long before Mayaeni caught the ear of multi-platinum producer/songwriter Toby Gad (Fergie’s “Big Girls Dont Cry”, Beyonce’s “If I Were A Boy”).
They co-wrote 5 songs together in early 2008. Toby introduced Mayaeni to his brother, Jens Gad, with whom Mayaeni went on to write many songs with, including her song "Hesitation" & "Falling Head First".
In the fall of 2008, Mayaeni caught the attention of mega producer/songwriter Linda Perry and signed a development deal with Custard/Universal Records. During that time she penned songs with numerous well-known writers/producers including Boots Ottestad, Sam Bisbee, Wes Hutchinson, Rosi Golan, Martin Doc McKinney and Linda Perry.
Upon expiration of the deal with Custard, Mayaeni returned to New York, where she incorporated her experiences of the last few years in a series of new songs, resulting in a unique and fresh sound, with an immediacy and honesty too often missing in todays music.
Mayaeni is a seasoned live performer whose poise and confidence would seem at odds with her youth. She wants to keep things simple: "I'm interested in making music that people can relate to and that is real" And real is just what Mayaeni is. Her skilled blending of the old school with the new promises great things for the future.
2010 has started well for Mayaeni. She is being extensively featured in the
Target/Converse One Star Ad-Campaign in stores from January, with the print campaign to begin in April.
After first band performances in Detroit and New York in March, she is starting to tour the country with her new all Detroit based band. And her first single, "The Right Way" found its way to radio in February, climbing the charts, even before its (self) release in March.

Summer Acoustic Tour
Youtube Videos
In the summer I put myself on a 10 city acoustic tour & being the nomad I am, had a blast drifting around the country, just me & my guitar.
I took one way plane rides, amtrack trains, chinatown busses, solo car trips, & rides from friends. I stayed in a mixture of hotel rooms, sublets, & couches in the homes of family and friends.
funding? being a songwriter pays off sometimes :-)
I played for my main city base in New York, my hometown Detroit, took in the culture of Philly that I love, hiked up some mountains before my show in Boulder, Colorado, felt the soul of Baltimore, passed through Chicago, & managed to make it out west to The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, California.
Sorry to say this video in no way captures an ounce
of this experience, but it
shows a freckle of it.
No doubt about it, was one of the best summers of my life.
